HISTORY

Verona Volunteer Fire Company (VVFC) proudly protects roughly 7,000 people living in an area of 44 square miles with an ISO rating of 5/9.  Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status, supplemented by career staffing from Augusta County Fire-Rescue Monday through Friday from 6am-6pm.  VVFC is a small one station department that protects a primarily rural/residential area with some large industries, two elementary schools, a middle school, a high school, the Regional Juvenile Detention Center, Regional Jail, and the County of Augusta Government Complex within our first due area.

The department was established in March 1959 in a small garage on the property while the fire station renovations were being performed. During that time, the 1946 Ford/John Bean pumper was housed in a garage at Walton Weller's home. Mr. Weller was the father of charter member, George Weller. The pumper was purchased from a department in Maryland for $600. It is currently being restored and is housed at the firehouse.

An additional 1,100 square feet was added to the station in the spring of 1972 at a cost of $5,500. A large portion of the labor was furnished by the firemen and community residents.

In February of 1975, Verona Fire Department purchased a new Fire Engine Manufactured by the Ford / John Bean Corporation. It held 500 gallons of water and was equipped with a 750 gallons per minute pump.

In 1982, a new station was constructed with a unique design. It had a drive through bay, but the apparatus were parked at an angle facing the front of the station.

In 2003, the process to renovate the station was started again.  The project was completed in 2006.  An additional 20,000 square feet of space was added to the 12,000 square feet already standing. The project was made possible by a low interest loan from Rural Development. The additions included new office space, a bunkroom, new commercial kitchen, and a social hall.  The social hall and commercial kitchen are available for rent.
